It's Just Food
I've been noticing lately that there's always a big "to do" in our house about what's for dinner. what's for breakfast. what's for lunch. what's there to drink. And on and on. It wasn't until recently, though, that I noticed a new answer coming out of my mouth. An answer that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE!!! You ready??? I give you...
It's just food!
What a FREEING response to all the hub bub. And really let's think about this...
Let's think about the "it's just food" mantra here. Because if it isn't just food, what is it? Is it your joy? Is it your comfort? Is it your favorite experience? Is it how your family bonds? Is it how you relax? What. EXACTLY...is it? If it's not just food?
I'm not suggesting that you take the joy out of eating. Or the fundamentals out of nutrition. I'm not suggesting food must suck and here's your ticket to the plain Jane buffet. I am simply suggesting that when you eat for joy... you eat for joy and you allow yourself that experience! That when you eat for nutrition, you eat things that are nutritious and move along with your day to ENJOY all the other things out there you love.
There's a habit (in my house anyways) that we have about giving food too much power! And I just am not ready to hand over my happiness to a flipping cheeseburger just yet (a double...maybe lol J/K). There's more pressing things for my family to fester on right now. Things more fun than what's hitting our dinner plates! After all, we have decorating for Halloween on a budget to do, we've got lots of dress up to play, we have a football to toss in the yard now that the weather doesn't suck so much!
And what if we don't have to refer to Pinterest today for our food, but can simply grab an apple and some peanut butter because food, no matter what it is, will satisfy our biological need to fuel ourselves and something healthy like that will also satisfy a sweet tooth craving. No checking calories. No checking carbs. Just checking IN with our bodies to see if number 1... we are hungry and number 2... we are full.
It's just food. And with that mindset I'm noticing myself free to talk about other stuff with my family. I'm noticing myself eating more in line with my body and less in line with my need for entertainment. I'm taking care of the entertainment doing other things. I'm bonding with my kids doing other things (though I do love a good cooking with the kiddos sesh).
If you find yourself focusing too much on what to eat... try this mantra on for size and see how it feels to say it, "it's just food." Does it feel like freedom for you like it does for me?
